Geïnspireerd op René Magritte’s schilderij “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” creëerde John Glaser een whisky die je aan het denken zet, net als het surrealistische werk uit 1929. Wat is luxueuze whisky? De samenstelling is in elk geval bijzonder: 79% Glen Ord, negentien jaar gerijpt op first-fill sherry butts, 4% dertig jaar oude Caol Ila en twee veertig jaar oude grain whisky’s, 10.1% Strathclyde en 6.9% Girvan. In augustus 2015 zijn er 4992 flessen gebotteld, un-chill filtered en uncoloured. De vatsterkte bedraagt 53.1%.

John Glaser, de oprichter van Compass Box, ziet zichzelf als een traditionele blender, die de kunst verstaat om van verschillende (malt)whisky's van diverse leeftijden originele en bijzondere nieuwe whisky's te creëren. Hij wordt dan ook geïnspireerd door de blending pioniers uit het begin van de 19de eeuw. De huisstijl van Compass Box is het best te omschrijven als complex, zacht en met een zoete, niet te droge afdronk. John Glasers interesse in whisky komt voort uit zijn vroegere werk bij de grote whiskyhuizen en vooral de verscheidenheid aan smaken en geuren die whisky kan bieden. Vooral de geschiedenis van de vaten met whisky heeft zijn grote belangstelling. Hij kwam na onderzoek tot de conclusie, dat goede whisky vooral te maken heeft met absolute topkwaliteit van vaten, waarin de whisky zich heeft ontwikkeld. Ouderdom betekent voor hem niet dat de whisky zo oud mogelijk moet zijn, maar dat hij zich maximaal ontwikkeld moet hebben op de leeftijd die het best bij die specifieke whisky past. John Glaser's filosofie is dan ook: “to me, whisky blending is an art- a platform for creativity”. De basis voor John Glaser 's Compass Box whisky's is de absolute topkwaliteit van de te gebruiken graan-en maltwhisky's.

Kleur: oud goud. Neus: complex, rijk en weelderig, lichte rokerigheid gaat mooi samen met aroma’s van krentjes en rozijnen, zoete sherryinvloeden, cacao, demerarasuiker, romige kokos, fijne kruidigheid en een duidelijke florale toets. Smaak: prachtige voortzetting van de neus, krachtig en dik, met wat meer fruitigheid dan in de neus. De afdronk houdt zeer lang aan met delicate zoete rooktonen.

This is Not a Luxury Whisky (53.1%, Compass Box, blend, 2015) Five stars If you follow Magritte’s famous pipe, this IS meant to be a Luxury Whisky – since there was a pipe in the painting - which the price does kind of confirm (around 200€). Now, there’s some very old grain and some Caol Ila 30 inside, so… And after all, I always like to quote Coco Chanel on luxury ‘Luxury isn’t the opposite of cheapness, it’s the opposite of vulgarity’. So nothing to do with prices, and some distillers will never manage to make their whiskies ‘luxury’ just by raising their prices. But back to Compass Box. Colour: deep gold. Nose: it seems that it needs a bit of breathing, let’s wait… zzz… Right, it would rather start with apple peelings and blond tobacco, plus various herbal teas, including plain tea and chamomile. After that, we’re rather having some wet beach sand, earth, certainly a little cedar wood (new humidor), and then ‘natural’ porridge and muesli. With water: love when essential oils come out. Swims extremely well. Mouth (neat): bright, and mainly spicy, earthy, and smoky. Did someone distil artisan lapsang souchong? Tends to become meady and orangey, which just works. A feeling of mango jam. I find this excellent, there mustn’t be much grain in this. Yeah I know it’s old grain. With water: spicier, more herbal, more oaky ‘of course’ but that oak rather added notes of earthy tea (oh, no, he’s gonna quote pu-erh again…) So pu-erh plus lapsang plus marmalade. Finish: medium, with something Christmassy. Must be the spiciness. The smoke also gets in your ey… I mean, your taste buds. Comments: excellent. Ceci n’est pas un très bon score.
